Common jobs and typical prices

Ranges are published UK figures for outside London. Pick a job for the full breakdown: what is included, what is extra, how long it takes and the rules that apply.

How a quote works

  1. Tell us the job. A few lines and your postcode is enough. Photos help, and the electrician may ask for them.
  2. A local electrician gets in touch. We pass your request to an electrician who covers your area. They contact you directly.
  3. You decide. Compare their quote with the ranges here. There is no fee and no obligation.

Before you hire anyone

  • Check they are on the Registered Competent Person register.
  • Get the quote in writing, and ask whether it includes VAT.
  • Ask what certificate you will get at the end.
  • For a fuse box, rewire or new circuit, make sure they will notify building control.

Good to know

Are these prices quotes?

No. They are published UK price ranges from the sources listed on each page, checked in November 2026. A real quote depends on your house, and an electrician needs to see the job, or photos of it, to give one.

Are Bolton and Wigan prices different from the UK average?

The sources we use publish UK ranges and London ranges, not figures for Bolton or Wigan, so we do not invent local prices. Where a source does give a Manchester figure, it is in line with other northern cities such as Leeds and Sheffield, and well below London.

How do I check an electrician is registered?

Search the Registered Competent Person Electrical register by name or postcode. It covers the main schemes, including NICEIC and NAPIT. A registered electrician can self-certify notifiable work under Part P.

Do prices include VAT?

Our main sources include VAT where it applies. Many sole-trader electricians are not VAT registered, and some quotes are given “plus VAT”, so always check.
